Whether you want to be funny peculiar, or funny like a clown, here’s some tips from Colgate Plax Whitening on becoming a master of mirth…
Are you the type of person whose jokes are usually greeted with universal tumbleweed and/or a HR disciplinary? Do you think it’s “hilarious” to dress up as a gorilla and chase secretaries around the office on Comic Relief Day? And do comparisons to Bernard Manning/ Joe Pasquale/ David Baddiel (delete as appropriate) follow you around every time you make a wisecrack?
If so, it’s likely you can benefit from fhm.com and Colgate Plax Whitening’s guide to being funny. We’ve got Dr. Chris Ritchie from Solent University’s Comedy Writing and Performance course (yes, it does really exist) to tell you how to induce more guffaws in six easy steps…

To become funnier, you need an aptitude for humour, which you can develop. Most comedians developed this in the schoolyard as a defence mechanism. Most comedians are inadequate human beings and if you are not tough, cool or handsome, using humour is a way of enhancing your social situation. |

To endear yourself to an audience, become self-deprecating. Jo Brand is a great example of this – she’s a larger lady, but pre-empts the hecklers by calling herself a ‘fat cow’. |

When writing a joke, be as brief and as brutal as possible. Too much detail will confuse people. |

The best jokes are the one everybody remembers. To do this, make sure your joke has an image that people will remember the next day. |
| 5 |
Realise how you deliver things. Work on material that is true to you. It’s no good being like Russell Brand and talking about how successful you are with the ladies if you look like a football hooligan. Also, somebody like Jack Dee is so successful because he has a dour face and looks like a miserable twat. |

Certain words are funnier than others. For example, swear words are funnier because most of them have hard consonants. And the word ‘spool’ will always be funnier than the word ‘reel’ because your face makes a monkey-like gesture when you say it. It’s about a momentary loss of dignity – we look like chimps with our lips extended which makes people want to laugh. |
Chocolate Danny DeVito was popular
